Old maid or single woman?

It is a social opinion that the main task of a single woman is to create a family, to marry and to have children. This goal determines the course of life of any single woman in her best years and she looks for the decent partner, and then does her best to take him to the marriage registration office. Men on the opposite are not willing to tie themselves with something spare, and to burden themselves with family cares. Therefore they want to get the maximum of physical pleasures from a single woman (or better not from one), and they pass by the dangerous registration office. And the treatment of single people of mature age is different. The man is considered to be free as he has reached his goal, and the single woman is unclaimed as she failed to get what she wanted.

 Social opinion is very loyal to single men, and scornful towards old maids. In softer tone it is a single woman. The primary meaning of "old age" and "virginity" is lost. Now it is a single woman over 30, who has no children, and who hasn`t found a constant life partner or decided not to do it just "to have everything that society requires". This single woman will be considered a loser.

 This point of view is naive and delusive. Traditionally a man acquires less cares and duties in marriage than a single woman. His life becomes more orderly, well-to-do, happy. Married men live several years longer, than bachelors, and have better health. And if you look closer at the "free shooter", you will see that his life is not so sweet without care of the single woman. 

A single woman find sit hard to be lonely under the pressure оf the social opinion. The burden of loneliness is easier for a single woman than that of marriage. When they say that family life is essential condition of health, happiness, and well-being, it is referred to men only. The destiny of a single woman when she gets married develops the different way.

 The last decades in the USA and Europe were marked by the wide-spread researches of the life length, physical and psychological health of the population. The results in different countries are very much the same, and equally unfavorable for a single woman who chose marriage. A single woman in marriage has worse health than a single woman who preserved her freedom or got divorced.

 Nowadays everyone knows that women live longer than men. But the deeper research showed that an average married woman lives just 2 years more than an average man, while a single woman lives in the average 13 years longer! Each single woman moves the statistics.

But that is not the only benefit of being a single woman. 70% of the world`s psychiatrists` clientele are female. For 100 married women 17 needs the help of psychiatrist. A single woman has a benefit again and only 3 of 100 need it.

A sensational research of the British doctor R. Harvey showed that 93% of tranquilizers and 97% of antidepressants bought by British women are used by married ladies. And only 65% of women in England are married. A single woman is calmer, more joyful and well-balanced. 

In older times it was undoubtful that marriage is to provide single woman with regular and full-pledged sexual life, while being a single woman dooms to dull celibacy or casual intercourses.

French psychologists Leroy and Rue compared the intimate life of 150 married women. The same quantity of single women took part. The result was again to the favour of a single woman. A single woman devotes twice more time to sex each week. More than one third of married women suffered from problems with orgasm. Less than each tenth single woman complained of it.

 When the research distinguished between housewives and married women, it showed that four times more housewives suffer from different phobias and neurotic illnesses. A single woman should remember that family hearth is the most dangerous working place.

 A single woman receives support from colleagues, while housewives have to suffer from psychological syndromes of depression, anxiety, lack of self-confidence. Many psychologists recommend a wife who suffers from it to become a single woman again to keep herself sane.

When the results of these researches were published, all those who depicted the terror of being single woman for decades, had to calm down. More and more specialists understand that for a sensitive and vulnerable single woman marriage is beyond her abilities. It is better for such a single woman to choose long-term relationships, guest marriage and other alike forms. This is a new reality for a single woman. If in pre-feministic epoch a single woman was called a spinster, now this single woman opens for herself the pure joy of independent life.

 Sociologists decided to study the phenomenon of modern single woman. And they found out two categories.

First type of a single woman is a super-busy career-oriented single woman of any field, from science to art and business. For the second type of a single woman her home is the corner of silence and rest in the sea of rushing life, that she needs to protect from the others.

 For both types of a single woman the first place is taken by peace and calmness and the possibility of self-realization. As a rule, such single woman has a partner, as single and independent as her, and able to understand her wish to be alone.

It is told that in ancient times one of the pupils asked Socrates if he should marry or not. The sage said "Do whatever you wish, you will be sorry anyway." This hold true till now, especially for the single woman in the light of all said above.
